Colts/Texans in game blog

PREGAME:

Brown and Moala are both inactive today.  DeVan is playing over Pollack.  All accounts are that the roof will be open.  Barf.

FIRST QUARTER:

  • The Colts win the toss, and take the ball. Manning hits his first 5 passes in a row, but two passes to Collie fall incomplete (the second on third down was a flat drop).  The Colts were going for the gutless punt on 4th and 6 from the 37, when the Texans jumped offsides.  On fourth down, Manning threw a terrible ball to an open Addai.  Texans start at the 31.  Simply a terrible toss by #18.  Addai wasn't super open, but the ball carried too far out of bounds.  Demond says Wayne was covered deep, and Clark may have been open.
  • The D comes out strong.  Freeny picks up the coverage sack to start the game.  Jennings hits Johnson for little gain.  On third and long, Powers saves a TD (so says Demond at the game) by tripping up Slaton on a screen.  The result is three and out for the Texans and Indy's ball.
  • Manning is just picking them apart.  He's dumping short on every throw, and the addition of Addai out in patterns is making all the difference.  79 yard drive ends with Manning hitting Kid Joe on 3rd and 4 for a 7 yard score.  7-0 Colts.  Manning might have 60 attempts today.
  • POWERS WITH THE PICK.  He couldn't be playing better.  Colts ball at midfield.
  • Manning hits Garcon with a huge pass for 26 yards, and then he gets the Texans to jump offsides on consecutive plays.  It set the Colts up with first and goal from the 4, but a negative run (LB untouched up the middle), a drop? on a pass behind Addai, and a one yard screen pass to Wayne (Collie had OPI on the play but was waived off).  Field goal gives the Colts a 10-0 lead.  This reminds me of the game in Houston last year where the Colts dominated early, but the Texans scored a bunch of points in the middle of the game.
  • We see the first vestiges of slipping from the kick coverage team as Cody Glenn (formerly of the practice squad until this week) picks up a 15 yard penalty on the coverage.  The D more than holds its own.  Two runs, a false start (thanks crowd noise!) and Freeney forces a third down scramble.  That's two three and outs and a pick for the Colts D.  Can't ask for more than that.
  • Colts are driving to end the quarter.  26 passes, 5 runs.  And the offense is moving the ball with ease.  So there you go.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • The Texans help the Colts with a couple of bad penalties, but the drive eventually stalls, and the Colts settle for 3.  Colts 13-0.  The lack of a real run game may be starting to catch up to Indy in the redzone.  The team just isn't converting in close the way the did early in the year.  Manning can't be happy with that.
  • Glenn atones for his earlier penalty with a HUGE stick inside the 20 on the kick off.  Houston is (was at least before they lost Owens) a good offensive team.  Well, at least they could pass.  Today, they can't do anything.  Freeney and Mathis sack Schaub on 3rd down, and the Texans punt AGAIN.  Incredible performance by one of the best defenses in football.  It's time to get a touch down and put this game away.
  • The Colts drive stalls as Addai is swarmed under on third and 1 from the 40.  He got hit 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage for a loss.  He had no chance to even make a move.  This team can't run block even a little bit.  Not even a little.  They punt on fourth and four.
  • The Texans go to the ground game and generate some first downs, and Johnson helps them out with a facemask penalty.  It takes them just four plays to get past where the Colts punted from.  The Texans get down inside the 35, and go for it on fourth and 1, by throwing to Andre Johnson. The Texans drive down near the goal line, but Moats fumbles.  Jerraud Powers makes a crazy smart play to reestablish himself in bounds.  After review, the ball is ruled to be a fumble, recovered in the endzone.  Colts ball.  Wow.  Houston was threatening to get back in the game, but the turnover saves the 13 point lead.
  • The Colts get bailed out after three straight incomplete passes to Clark.  Dallas gets popped on third down and drops the ball.  The Texan is called for a personal foul.  Manning drives them deep into Houston territory before throwing an awful pick.  The Texans run it back to midfield, and now threaten to score.  They have the dreaded "two for none" working. They could have the lead before the Colts ever see the ball again.
  • The D does a credible job, only allowing 12 yards.  The Texans started at the 50, so it was enough for a 56 yards FG attempt.  His first attempt was blocked, but the Colts called timeout first.  That's never a move that makes sense.  Why let him practice?  Stupid, stupid move by Caldwell.  Brown hits the kick on the second attempt.  13-3 Colts.

HALFTIME:

Manning has already thrown the ball 40 times for just 6 yards a throw.  That's not a recipe for success. The defense was incredible, and Indy leads by 10, but this was a deeply frustrating half.  The Colts should be up by 20 at least.  They have to find a way to run the ball in the second half.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • The Colts didn't put them away when they had the chance, and now the Texans are back in the game.  The key play on the drive was Schaub escaping Mathis on third and 7 and scrambling for 19 yards.  It was close to being a sack and a punt, but instead went the other way.  The Texans wound up down on the goal line and scored easily.  13-10 Colts.  Game on.  Nightmare:  continuing.
  • The Texans continue to self destruct.  This time a stupid personal foul after the kick off set up the Colts at the 45 yard line.  The Colts don't take advantage, however, as they elect to punt on fourth and one with a three and out.  No sooner do I praise Caldwell this week, than he shows up with an AWFUL game.  Tons of punts on fourth and short, a stupid decision to take the ball in the first quarter, and an inexcusable time out on the field goal attempt.  He's coached this game to lose it.  Terrible job.
  • A moronic blitz on 3rd and 5 gives the Texans a big play.  They pass the 46 in just three plays.  The Colts brought the house and didn't come close to reaching Schaub.  The Texans convert two more third and mediums on the drive.  They now face third and goal from the half yard line as the third quarter ends.
  • Indy has punted on 4th and 3 from the 39 and 4th and 1 from the 45.  They are on the verge of trailing 17-13 (barring a miracle stop).  Manning is going to need another fourth quarter comeback if the Horse hopes to pull one out today.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Touchdown Texans.  17-13.  Betcha wish you had that stupid punt back, Jim.
  • WTF?  Wayne throws a flanker pass which is picked off.  Awful throw.  What was Wayne thinking?  He threw a duck.  Hard to kill the call after it worked with Addai last week, but that throw was insanely bad.  Indy is in serious trouble.
  • HUGE stand by the D.  Jennings drops a potential pick six, but the D holds in three plays.  Colts survive the stupid pick, and get the ball near the 40.
  • Joe Addai carries the Colts downfield and into the endzone.  The Horse finally finds some running plays, and Addai delivers on third and goal from the one.  He got hit in the backfield (again), but danced his way to the go ahead score.  20-17 Colts.  It's time for the D to make another stand.  It's Freeney and Mathis time!
  • Another huge third down conversion for the Texans as Jennings falls down to get the drive going.  A holding call and a brilliant play by Foster forced another huge third down, which Schaub converts again for 20 plus yards to Johnson.  This time the blitz saves the day, however, as Brackett hits Schaub as he throws and Session picks it off.  Colts ball with 2:14 to play. The Texans have 2 timeouts, so one first down will win the game.
  • The O Line collapses at the wrong time.  A two yard run, a false start, and a sack fumble (mercifully recovered by Diem) took the clock down to the two minute warning.  Addai does his best on third and long, but Houston will get the ball with 1:40 and change and no timeouts.  McAfee puts it down around the 15.  The D needs to hang on one more time.
  • The D plays soft, and the Texans make it out near midfield, but use a minute to do it.  Schaub makes a miracle completion to avoid the sack, and the Texans pick up yet another big third down.  The Texans get the ball down to the 25 with just :01 to go.

On 4th and 1, why run 87 deep to the end zone where he can't see the ball?

how the hell can the colts run an offense in the red zone with that glare? They can't run the ball and they can't pass if the receivers can't see the ball.
Penalty?
written by wing, November 08, 2009
That offsides/holding penalty was a dumb (although probably correct) ruling, if the offsides caused the holding shouldn't we still get 5 yards instead of going back to 1st and 10?

Colts had to pass on Two straight 3d and 1 plays before the INT by 87. But after losing two yards on a run on 3d and 1, what can you do?

Someone tell Jennings that he has no fingers on his chest. Use the hands to make INTs.

I don't kill the play call. Just the throw. Wayne has to be smarter than that. You only throw if the man is WIIIIIDE open.
Great Blitz

After sitting back on 3d and 10 and letting the Texans complete an easy pass for the first down, Colts blitz and get the hit that causes the INT.

Yes, I admit. That was a great blitz.

I don't wanna nitpick too much, but when Addai is getting 5 yards a clip FINALLY can we pound the ball?

OK, he makes 1&10 2nd and 5...give him the ball back!

Also, 2nd straight game with tons of yards and not much on the scoreboard to show for it.

I'll take it
written by dmstorm22, November 08, 2009
We should have been up big early, but their defense played well in the red zone. I give them credit. They took it too us for a while. Defense manned up when it mattered. Running game actually looked pretty good in the second half. They are a good team. We play a better team next week. We have to play better, but in the NFL, against a team that is a legitimate playoff team, I'll take it.

Also, on the last offensive play by HOU, wouldn't it have been smart of them to let Jones(or whoever caught that ball) for a couple seconds to waste time. They barely got the spike down, and he was tackled immediately.
I am so mad right now

Yeah the Colts won, but this should have been a bigger win, much bigger. The offense should't have strugged this much. God am I frustrated as hell
Lucky, but I'll take it
written by JTBLA, November 08, 2009
Second week in a row the offense has struggled and Peyton unable to hit deep balls. They need Donald Brown back to give them a home run threat out of the backfield, though Addai has been a warrior the best two weeks.

I'll post my full thoughts later, but basically the last two games show you what happen when you don't have any run game...you struggle in the red zone.

Don't be mad about this loss...that was a good team we beat. It was always going to be that close. Sure, they should have blown them out, but this was a game Indy HAD to have. A loss, and Houston thinks they can still win the division.

Best move of the game: Caldwell not calling timeout before the last field goal. Thank God he learned his lesson.

They're killing me
written by funtime42, November 08, 2009
I'm in NFC North country, so unless they're an evening game or playing the Pats, I never get to see the Colts play 60 minutes of football. Even when they're scheduled, the networks cut away mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Except - this year, for some really odd reason, the Chicago stations are showing all Colts as the alternate game. They didn't even cut away during the Rams blowout. These "let the other guys in and make it interesting" games are just killing me.

Of course, I was raised a Bengals fan, so I'm used to that...
The Wayne Pick
written by Drew Funk, November 08, 2009
I kill the call, and I reluctantly cite an Easterbrook theory to do it. WR passes are not as effective because your best receiver is now not receiving, which provides more coverage to the lesser receivers. HB passes work better because defenders are more likely to believe it's a run, and your top receiver may be left uncovered as defenders try to get to the back. So, Addai pass = good call. Wayne, Clark, or Garcon pass: not so much.

Of course, I think all are significantly inferior to "Peyton Manning Pass," and so they shouldn't be called unless there is very very compelling evidence to do so. I don't believe that was the case today.

I totally agree with Drew Funk. The Wayne pass was a horrible play, and I didn't like the Addai pass to be honest. If you have the best QB in the league, let him pass the ball, please. Not the guy who was supposed to be receiving it.

Re: photo...nice idea. It's Demond's call though.

RE: Pick...I totally understand, and think those are points are more than fair. I just worry about being consistent, and I praised the Addai play, so I'm not going to crush the Wayne play.

The truth is that it was a HORRIBLE decision by Wayne. He made the coaches look bad there. I think calling it so soon after the last one hurt the effectiveness as well. I'm not going to fight with anyone who rips it. It's not an easy play call to defend analytically. Caldwell had a ROUGH day today, IMO. I'll write more on it in the game recap...which will come tomorrow AM.

I was sweating that last play, but hey, them's the breaks. Sometimes you hit the 47 yarder to win, and sometimes you miss wide left for the loss.

I'll give Caldwell credit for challenging the fumble in the first half.

I'll take away some of that credit for calling a Wayne option play. WTF? At least Addai used to be a QB.

"I am so mad right now."

I'm with you, Robert. I was seething from the 3q on. I was absolutely melting down. I thought I might get kicked out of LOS for a moment. I'm furious with Caldwell's decision making. 4th and 4 from the 40 and later 4th and 1 from the 40. Look, I understand the Indy D played amazing. But you go for it there. Houston is probably the third or fourth best O in the league -- odds say you don't hold them down for long. And sure enough they stormed the ball down the field both times (the first time eventually fumbling at the one, if I recall correctly).

Obviously the win makes me less angry, but I want an explanation of those calls because they were terrible.

RE: Reggie. I'm not going to kill Reggie or the coaches because they will never make this mistake again. Bad play, worse execution. Reggie was PISSED after the game. Very short with even the local media. He will be harder on himself than anyone. I like that attitude.

But, again, I am angry at Caldwell's coaching because the question remains: Will he learn from this? The second call was worse because Houston had already proven they can go 90 yards in a heartbeat. You punt on fourth and 1 from the 40? Really? Look at it this way: Would someone punt the ball to Indy's O, if they had a 4th and 1 from the Indy 40? Nope. You have to have the same respect for the Texans O because they are damn good.
...

Brilliant point.

No one would punt to Indy on fourth and short. Why would the Colts do it?

well put.
I am really scared
written by dmstorm22, November 08, 2009
about how conservative Caldwell has been on 4th down. Really worried. It was fine in other games when we were winning by 20, but when the Colts whittle it down the field 40 yards, and then get a 4th and 1, go for it. That is why our O has been racking up yards and not points. That, and not getting it done always in the red zone.

That's true DZ. It's going to make me sick to my stomach to pull for Pittsburgh tomorrow, but having a 2-game lead on the entire AFC halfway through the season would be huge. The wildcard race is going to be chaotic this year. I'm glad we aren't having to worry about it (as of now). I think we can go 3-1 vs NE, Den, Balt, and Houston, which (barring letdowns against the Jags or Jets) could lock up a #1 seed.

Glad to see you guys noticed the preposterous punts. I am not sure I remember a Colts game that was as poorly coached/called as this one in the post-Mora era. Don't forget that he also tried to punt from the 37 but got bailed out by the penalty. That in addition to the ones from the 39 and 45.

Funtime,

Do you live in Chicago? Did they end up not blacking out the CBS noon game?

I went out and got drunk today because they were not supposed to show a game against the stupid Bears. If they did show it, I'm going to be very angry.

Of course, I should've been at LOS... didn't feel like making the drive alone this weekend though.

I guess that without Hayden the Pats can move the ball and get a ton of first downs with their offense... but nothing about either defense scares me.

I respect the way they play and they are an elite team, but I don't fear any team, not even the Pats from a couple years ago. The Colts are good enough that it boils down to whether they do the things they are capable of.
If they lose to somebody it won't just be because another team played well. It will be due to the fact that they made mistakes along the way.

ah. Just outside the grey blotch of blackout on the NFL TV maps.

At least the beers were only 2 bucks, so I wasn't out too much money (besides my ticket costs, of course). I did have to sit next to an annoying Colts "fan" who bet Texans +9 and was thus annoying as hell til the 17-13 score made it obvious he'd win the bet.

Not that I disagreed with his bet at all - I think it was too high a line - but a) the game should've been ended early and b) if I made a bet like that, I'd consider it a sunk cost and root for the team, not the bet. Bad fan.

"We could lose huge."

Doubt it. Remember this: Houston is a good team and this was a good result against them.

Some of us are frustrated because the game shouldn't have been very close... but that doesn't take away from the fact that it was a monster win, and another brilliant defensive performance.

There are advantages to the Rockford stations this year - double header Sundays usually give me 4 - 6 games to choose from. Of course last year, most of the alternate games featured Detroit. The comedy value did not outweigh the badness.

Remember this: Houston is a good team

Indeed. Remember, for as poorly as the Colts played in many ways, the Texans also handed over a lot of free yards. 100 yards of penalties isn't likely to happen again in 3 weeks. So they'll need to improve their play by roughly that much. (Which I think is possible.)

Patriots look average, then play 0 win Tennessee and Tampa, then 2 win Miami at home...and they are back? I keep hearing it's 2007 again! Really?

We played Miami...their secondary is even worse now.

And is it national make excuses for the Texans day? Yeah, if you played the game again a few things could go their way. The Colts could play better too, and the field goal only means a 50% chance at having another chance to make a field goal, so I'm confused why everyone is making the leap from they make the field goal to they win.
