One word about the Collie PI call

I've had to listen to bizarre whining about the pass interference call in the final minutes that gave the Colts the ball at the 15.  I've heard JC complain.  Bill Simmons whined incessantly.  The idiot 'Pod Vader' on ESPN's Football Today Podcast complained nonstop that the call was terrible.

Having just watched that play about 10xs, let me just respond by saying:

Are you people insane?

1.  It was on first and 10.  It did not "keep an Indy drive alive".  It was a 30 yard penalty.  Big, but not huge.

2.  Collie had two hands on the ball.  It was not a 'wild, uncatchable' ball.

3.  The DB CLEARLY grabs Collie, and almost pulls his jersey off the shoulder pad.  It should have been holding, but they missed that call.  When you watch the play, watch Collie's jersey almost come off his shoulder.  That was a mugging.

4. The DB clearly hip-checks Collie before the ball arrives.

This was a simple, obvious call.  Not only was it not a bad call, it was an easy call for the officials.

Find something else to whine about, people.

I think a lot of those jokers only watched the game broadcast once and didn't see the replays.

And speaking of replays: Did you record the game? Or do you happen to have a link to the play on YouTube or some other site? Yeah, I know I can search for it, but I'd rather see if I can get lucky and find someone who's already got the link smilies/grin.gif. Anyway, I want to watch the play myself one more time.

I really need a DVR. smilies/sad.gif

But Deion said it was an awful call! And he's so smart!

It's pretty obvious that Collie's upper body changes direction for a second because he gets grabbed. They were grabby all game - same thing happened on the final TD too. Guy grabbed Reggie by the waist, just enough to slow him down a touch, making it a really difficult fingertip catch.

I also hated how Simmons said NBC didn't show the replay and the announcers didn't talk about it, as if it was some sort of shady conspiracy. Not only did they show the replay (at least once), Collinsworth clearly said he agreed with the call. What a moron.

if the refs are out to get the Pats, why did they wait for the Pats to take a 31-14 lead before they showed their true colors??

This whole "officials love the Colts" is such garbage. Especially since the Pats are as popular, and as much a ratings and moneymaking machine as the Colts are.
That's the beauty of Boston

No matter how popular...
No matter how big of a payroll...
No matter how many big names are on the roster...
No matter what, Boston teams are always disrespected underdogs to the loudmouth fans like Simmons. Do they forget the footage from earlier this year where Brady asked for a flag, got it, then smiled? Or is that just Tawmmy-boy being plucky?

I thought the Colts receivers were being manhandled all night at least 10 yards downfield and it was never called. Besides, you grab a jersey and the official will throw the flag every time, regardless of the team.

Ugh, I hate how the Colts are getting little credit for sticking around and pulling out an amazing and improbable win.

I saw everything you saw DZ...it was a good call by the Refs

It's so annoying when he uses a complete fallacy as a given fact. I really like Simmons but he is delusional saying it was uncatchable, it hit his hands and he damn near had it! It is agreed on by everyone I have heard that it was a terrible call.

But this is the national storyline so deal with it: Colts depleted secondary burned by Moss, Colts lucky with bad PI penalty, BB blew the game, the Patriots dominated the game and are "clearly the better team today" (thanks Scott VP).

Would anyone ever say that a 6-3 Colts team that lost to 9-0 Patriots team was the better team?
Something else to whine about?

I thought this was the other thing to whine about... At least we've partly moved on from the 4th and 2 discussion.

It was a good call. One the Pats would have gotten if they were in the same position. Even on the road.

And, Bodden interfered with Garcon on every play. One was called.

And, on the Pats drive, that ended in the 4th and 2, the Pats got an extra 0.5 yards on Welker's catch and another ball length on the near interception. So on that drive, they managed less, than 9.5 yards.

Two more things, I think, this ref was the guy who called 0 penalties against the Pats and 9 against the Rams in last year Rams-Pats game. (He also has the highest home team win percentage.)

Silliness....

I like that it is a DB who calls it a terrible call and a WR who says it was the right call. You think there might be a little BIAS from both points on that one?

Well, if we're going to digress to missed calls / penalties that should've been noticed, I saw a hold on Freeney that was more egregious than normal. Usually, LTs have Freney in a half Nelson or something, which is pretty bad. But on this running play to the left, I recall that the guy had both arms around Freeney while forcing him down onto the ground. In football terms, it looked like an actual arm-wrapping tackle from behind. In more crude terms, it looked like a sexual assault doggie-style. Either way, it exceeded the term "hold" by a large marging. And there was not a peep out of the refs, the play-by-play guys, or anyone. I think *I* was the only one on the Indystar Phil B live chat that night to scream about it.

Freeney's been egregiously held before, but this was a from-the-back, two-armed takedown. Unless there's something about the rules I'm unaware of, that had to have been a penalty.

It's also worth noting that nobody on the Patriots, including the person who got flagged, complained or even made a face.

Holding/illegal contact/PI was part of their game plan. It was obvious. They knew it was unlikely to be called and were doing those little grabs and holds that are hard to see. On this one, he got caught. Big deal. The Colts would've gotten those yards on the next play anyway.
