Colts Cut Commentary
Written by Nate Dunlevy

The final cuts have been announced.  Among the notables:

Mike Hart, Josh Thomas, Marcus Howard, and Terrance Taylor (4th round pick this year)

This means that Chad Simpson is the back up RB, TJ Rushing made the squad (probably as the return man), Curtis Painter is the third QB, and...

Bob Sanders is off the PUP list.

This means the Colts expect him to play before week 6.

Marcus Howard is the only huge surprise on the list, as he seemed to have great speed and real upside.  Painter obviously impressed the team enough to earn himself a roster spot, although the team will have another cut to make when Ed Johnson becomes available.  They may chose to cut Painter then, figuring that most teams will have already made whatever QB moves they were likely to make this week, thus making it safer to expose Painter.

UPDATE:

Here's some more thoughts:

  • Hagler and Keiaho both made the cut.  It's amazing that just one year ago, both were 'starters' and now they can barely make the squad.
  • As was pointed out in the comments, Andrus made the squad (so far).  That's probably just for kickoffs, unless the team didn't like what it saw when AV just missed that FG the other day.
  • 3 QBs and 3 kickers.  Maybe it is a new day in Indianapolis after all.  Ed Johnson is coming back in a week, and I have to think that either Andrus or Painter won't last past the Jags game.

Howard is the obvious one, but

your not surprised about hart or ball? I think Ball was far superior to Simpson

Does this mean we kept 3 kickers? I don't see Andrus on the list.
Remaining .. part 2

I see that we did indeed keep 3 kickers. Kinda unusual; I wonder if it is reasonable to read into that they are a bit concerned about Vinatieri.

Still hate to see that they cut Grady. Seems like he played decent and the joy in his face seemed genuine.

It wouldn't be too hard to reduce the roster by another 4 or 5 guys . . .. lets see what shows up on the waiver wire .....

Hello .. Dominic!

Bummed about Grady, someone will snatch him up.
Only thing more shocking than 7 LBs is that Kieho is in.
Andrus is a suprise. Might be based on AV, but I think it is more the fact of what other teems need.
I don't see Simpson lasting till Jax, has to be something better on the waiver wire.
I am really hoping to see Grady, Taj, Tauliili, and Taylor make the practice squad.
I really think they are wasting a spot on Santi. Good player but won't see the field much due to injury.

Grady has a chance to make the practice squad (as does Taylor).

My guess is that AV isn't ready for kickoff duty yet. McAfee was awful at it, so they had to keep someone.

I felt that Simpson and Ball were about the same. Both had awful numbers. Simpson can return kicks, I guess. It probably came down to special team play. Besides that, I wouldn't be surprised Simpson get dumped for Rhodes.

3 QBs and 3 kickers...wow. That might change before too long. Hopefully Howard comes back then, maybe.
Apparantly

Simpson made it over Hart and Ball because of his ST contribution.

We are possibly holding Painter to phase Sorgi out next year.

We need more TEs than WRs.

We really missed on Taylor in the fourth. On a related note, the Bears fans in these parts are lamenting the cutting of their fourth round rookie, Marcus Freeman. Apparantly both were risks that didn't pan out.

Andrus, who is solid, is needed because Vinny has some ?'s.

Keiaho has discriminating pictures of management.

Bob Sanders is doing better than some feared.

I'm not suprised about Simpson over Ball/Hart. The Special Teams angle makes sense though.

I hate hate hate 3 QBs, 3 kickers. But I agree that is likely to change soon, probably at both positions.
the 4th round
written by saintnixon, September 06, 2009
it seems to me that the 4th round is a bit early to be wasting picks on potential practice squad players...

and i hate, hate, HATE freddie keiaho. his gross ineptitude in pass coverage was a significant part of the colts' inability to beat the chargers in the playoffs last years.

I think that is just perception. The numbers have shown that over time, most of the the lower rounds have about the same success rate when it comes to drafting. The first round is where you have to hit, but after like round 2, it's all just a big crap shoot.
Does the 3rd RB
written by Josh K., September 06, 2009
actually matter?

It seems to me that if Addai and Brown stay healthy the 3rd RB gets 0 carries. If either Addai or Brown go down for a game or longer then I'm guessing the 3rd RB gets fewer than 5 carries per game, if any.

I suppose you could make the argument that the 3rd RB is a development project... but I don't buy it. Those guys don't usually get second contracts, do they?

So arguing about Simpson vs Ball seems like a waste of time for anyone who is actually not a coach or GM of the team.

With that in mind, why would Dom want to come back to the Colts knowing that his only chance to play at all is going to be if Addai or Brown go down (not including special teams and garbage weeks at the end of the season)?
Kravitz did a hilarious article

Why can't we see more of this Kravitz instead of the one who tries to run a Hall of Hame head coach out of town?

I hope the colts pick up Justin Miller, KR/CB from Oakland who got cut yesterday. God knows when the colts last had a dynamic return man, they def. don't know with Rushing
