18 Things to Watch in Monday's Game at Miami

I'm not sure why you'd name a stadium after this guy, but I will admit...he's badass.

Last week the Colts hung on against the Jags, and gave themselves an early one game lead over the rest of the AFC South.  Their reward is a trip to Miami...to play another football game.  The Colts are always a popular prime-time participant, and will make their only Monday Night Football appearance this year, the first of at least 5 throughout the season.  As you are turning down the sound on Jon Gruden this week, be sure to watch for:

1.  Watch for turnovers. Last year the Dolphins had the best take away/give away ratio in the NFL. The Colts were fourth. This year the two teams were a combined -6 in their first game.  It may be a cliche, but the team that doesn't turn the ball over will likely come out on top.  Turnovers killed the Dolphins last week, and they were the only thing that kept the Colts' game close.

2.  Watch the packages. A South Beach favorite for many, it's a football necessity on Monday night.  On the Colts' side, check out whether they go with three WRs or two TEs.  Last Sunday they opened with two TEs with good success, but dumped it when Gonzo went down, finishing the game exclusively in a three wide look.  While they still like to split the TEs wide even when they are in game, the different personnel groupings affect the audibles Manning can call.  On the Dolphins side, they are famous for their "Wildcat" set.  The formations should be informative on Monday night.

3.  Watch the king of the work week. It's always been said that Peyton Manning is a tireless worker, which makes it fitting that he so completely owns non-weekend games.  When the rest of America heads off to the office, Peyton does too.  He does his best work on Monday's and Thursday's.  For his career, he's posted a sick record of 14-4, 44 TDs, 14 picks, and a rating of 106.7 in Monday and Thursday night games.

4.  Watch the run game in the fourth quarter.  The Colts' run game was workable for most of the game last week, but the failure to run out the clock with the game on the line was devastating.   The Colts need to run the ball upwards of 4 yards a carry if they want to have an elite offense, but more importantly, they must be able to control the clock in the fourth quarter.  It's already cost them dearly this calendar year, and it's a trend that has to be reversed if this team is to be considered a serious Super Bowl contender.

5.  Watch for old friends. The Colts and Dolphins used to play twice year until the advent of realignment.  Now, they rarely see one another.  The last regular season game the Colts had in Miami was in 2003.  That game featured a pair of incredible plays by Dwight Freeney to seal a 23-17 win for the Colts.  What was once a nice rivalry that featured many memorable games has gone cold.

6.  Watch for an identity crisis.  The Dolphins rename their stadium every three weeks or so.  Honestly, I have no idea what they call it now.  Barry Manilow Field at Bob Marley Point...or something.  Whatever.  We won the Super Bowl there. That's what I remember.

7.  Watch the conquering hero. Reggie Wayne's dominant performance last week quieted any remaining critics or doubters he may still have had.  Now he's coming back to the place where he played college ball as one of the absolutely unquestioned best WRs in the game.  The truth is that Wayne has been doing this for years, but people always found a reason to doubt him.  "Marvin Harrison plays on the same team!", they would say, forgetting that Harrison barely played in 2007 and was not double covered last year.  Now, the spot light will be squarely on the the man who proudly declares himself to be from "The U".

8.  Watch Jason Taylor. He's gone from a 4-3 end to a 3-4 backer, but he's still a feared pass rusher.  The Colts did a fine job keeping Manning upright last week, but Charlie Johnson won't be facing a first round bust this time.  Taylor is one of the best all-time at taking down the QB.  He's going to be coming.  The Colts have to keep him from arriving.

9.  Watch for the truth. Colts' fans might not want to admit it, but the offense is no longer elite.  Without a credible number two WR (as long as Gonzo is out), and with no discernible running game, a suspect line (who played well last week), and a kicker who is questionable from 50 yards, the Colts simply aren't the same offense that hung up huge numbers for most of the decade.  They still can strike quickly, and will have some big games from time to time, but it's unreasonable to expect them to post games in the high 20s regularly.  The Colts best unit is clearly the defense.  It may be exactly the kind of switch the team needs, too.

10.  Watch Ed Johnson up front. Last week, the Colts front line did a credible job slowing down the Jags run game, and they did so without starting DT Ed Johnson.  The Dolphins lack a deep passing game, so they need the run to establish the offense.  If the Colts can hold the 'Phins under 4.5 YPC, they should be able to get them off the field regularly.

11.  Watch the old nemesis.  Chad Pennington has a weird history against the Colts.  He only has one win in four games, but that win came in the 41-0 loss at the Jets in the playoffs.  In three regular season meetings, his teams are 0-3, but his numbers are insane.  He's completed 67.4% of his passes with a rating of 123.2.  In a wild game at the Dome, he actually posted a perfect QB rating in a 38-31 loss to the Colts (only the fourth time in history a perfect QB rating meant a lost game).

12.  Watch the kid earn his money.  For the second straight week Dwight Freeney will face off against a young, highly drafted left tackle.  Jake Long was the first pick in the NFL draft in 2008, and had a good rookie year.  Now it gets serious, however as he has to take on one of the top pass rushers in the NFL.  How Long handles Freeney will go a long way to deciding the game.  If Freeney breaks free for a couple of sacks, the Dolphins will have a difficult time winning the game.

13.  Watch the ghosts. The Dolphins' persona is dominated by Dan Marino.  Now his current day equivalent comes to town.  Manning's similarity scores show a strong resemblance to Marino, and it's hard to watch him play in Miami without remembering their epic duel at the end of 1999.  It was Manning's only career win against Marino (in four games), but it was an incredible game.

14.  Watch Clark up the seam. Tony Gonzalez had a field day up the middle on the Miami safeties on Sunday, racking up 73 yards and a score on just 5 catches.  Dallas Clark posses endless matchup problems, and if Miami can't figure out a way to cover him on deep balls over the middle, Manning will find him all night long.

15. Watch for Chucky.  Jon Gruden's addition to the Monday Night Football team is a curious one.  Combined with Ron Jaworski, he brings a lot of manic energy to the booth.  He's been rumored to be unhappy with Jaws, and has also brought Dan Fouts, Steve Young, and Rich Gannon in to compete for the co-analyst job.  He figures that Mike Tirico is fine on his own and has pathologically ignored his performance altogether, feeling that the best use of his time is perpetually juggle the quarterbacks that are set to call alongside him.  The Cleveland Browns are said to be very interested in calling him to announce their games.

16.  Watch the ex-teammate.  Ted Ginn Jr. was drafted as a WR/KR early in the same draft the Colts took his teammate Anthony Gonzalez.  Until Gonzo went down with injury, the game was going to be an interesting comparison of #1 and #2 WRs on the same college team.  Now, the Colts are left to have to worry about how to contain Ginn in the return game.  He was mediocre last year, but the Colts have a bad history of covering kicks.  A big return could be just the extra offense the Dolphins need to pull out a win.

17.  Watch the road warriors.  Since 2005, the Colts are an insane 16-4 in non-division road games.  They are a tough team to beat when matched up against teams they don't play regularly.

18.  Watch for the record. With a win, Manning will pass Johnny Unitas for the most victories all time as a Colt QB.  Johnny U is one of the game's most enduring icons, and Manning is a fitting heir.  Deshwan thinks Manning nabs the record 14-10.  Demond likes the Colts 23-20.

I have a question:

After watching the Miami game last night I am concerned with the condition of the field at Landshark Stadium. Do you think that the baseball in field will be filled in with grass? There's quite a difference (and a potential for injuries) between the dirt and the turf.

Thanks.

Colts are going to run away with this one. A Pro Bowl receiver, a HoF QB, and a (gonna be) Pro Bowl TE still constitute an elite offense in my book. Plus our corners looked outstanding in the first game, and Penny has less zip on his throws than Garrard. I think this is when Hayden gets his yearly TD.

Slow down there on no. 9. There is a difference betweeen realism and flat out pessimism, and while you're somewhere in between, I think you need to rethink the offense. We are not the top offense anymore nor are we the juggernaut we were three years ago. But even without Gonzo, the threesome of Peyton, Wayne, and Clark gives the Colts a competitive advantage over 90+% of teams in the league. I wouldn't say "no longer elite." We are just not THE elite offense anymore and are certainly not the top one. And remember that Jax has a fast, tough, young defense that our o-line held up nicely against. That is not really praise of the o-line but i think the run game will much improve as the season progresses. Don't count them out yet.

Yet, I somewhat agree what you said about the defense. I don't believe they are better than the offense at all, but they are certainly a big strength now, and that is a great thing.
Penny
written by Westside-Rob, September 18, 2009
The ONLY thing that makes me nervous in this game is Penny. He's had some great games against the Colts in the past. Granted it was usually against the old Dungy give 15 yards on 3rd and 7 style defense that Penny's accuracy just perfectly matched up against. I'm hoping that the more aggressive Coyer defense will fare better against Penny, and force him to make some throws down the field by taking away more of the underneath stuff. The Colts did reasonably well against the Jags running game. I expect them to be even better with Ed back. Moala should be back too which gives them some additional depth to keep people fresh, though he might be a possible inactive for the game.

The Colts can still field a good offense and an effective one.

Without Gonzo, I don't think they'll be truly elite.

We are probably just haggling over what elite means, so there's not much discussion to be had.

This team hasn't run the ball well in closing in on two full seasons. It still can't run the ball to kill the clock at the end of the game. If a team has one elite corner that can shut down Reggie Wayne without much help, I wonder where the plays will come from down field.

I didn't say the Colts' offense was bad. Just not "elite". It's not one of the great offenses of all time like it was 2004-first half of 2007.

Having said that, I think the D could be elite. It's got a chance to be a special group. I loved what I saw on the tape last week.
With all due respect guys

That looks more like a 'Shark with frickinnnnnn laser beams attached to his head'

I know that's what Google Images gave you for Landshark but you can't not drop a Dr Evil reference there.

written by DZ, September 19, 2009
Give me some credit dude. I figured the Dr. Evil reference was more obvious than "Landshark Stadium". I thought most people would figure I was making some weird Dolphin joke.

Seriously, Landshark Stadium? The Dolphins deserve to lose every home game this year.

If the Colts keep the run in relative check (say Williams/Brown under 120 yards) and don't make any special teams blunder, pretty sure it's a win.

If the game plan is Pennington dinking and dunking and lots of running I don't think that will be enough.

I just hope that Caldwell doesn't get conservative because of Brown getting stuffed on the 4th and 1.

South Beach joke
written by Bob M, September 19, 2009
Watching packages is a South Beach favorite for many? I am totally ROFLMAO. A good buddy from college lived there for a couple years before he came out of the closet--it may be what nudged him out. That is a very funny line.

I will now read the rest of the post.

First off, let me say that I really enjoy this site. Your analysis is generally first rate and a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of Colts talk.

That said, I think it is premature to anoint the defense as the Colts' best unit. FO calls the week between Week 1 and Week 2 National Jump to Conclusions Week, and I think you guys are in danger of just such a mistake.

The offense (other than Reggie) looked a little bit off last week, but I expect them to be better from now on. Clark and Robinson (and maybe even Tamme) will be bigger factors in the weeks to come.

While I like the direction the defense is headed, it is still problematic. In certain passing situations, the Colts might very well be the best equipped defense. However, even with the return of Ed Johnson, I really think they are susceptible to a competent running atack. Where an offense can compensate for a lack of a running game by passing accurately, a defense vulnerable to the run is in danger of being run over.

written by DZ, September 20, 2009
@Bob...thanks. I'm glad someone thought that was funny!

@scipio...I'm not basing it just on last week. Via normal (re: crappy) measures, the D was the better unit last year. I just think the D has fewer question marks, and more elite players. I think Freeney, Mathis, Hayden, Bethea are all excellent. Brackett, Session are good...and we haven't even had Sanders on the field yet. My bet is this D turns into a top 5 unit, and I'm not confident the offense will get there.

I don't worry about good running teams, becuase really good running teams are seldom really good teams overall. It's a passing league and I'm not sure that any team is better equipped to handle the pass than the Colts right now.

I just have more confidence in that side of the ball.

Ok, there are two options:

1. Check out channelsurfing.net They should have the game.

2. If that doesn't work, email me privately ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and I'll hook you up.

Go with Channelsurfing.net first though. I'm about 90% sure you'll get the game that way.

a few things, i dont know if channelsurfing is compatable with sopcast as that what i use.

2. last week i had sopcast working, eeting ice cream and football nearing one am, hehe, but then the feed cut out, literally aftr the opening kickoff,

3. i tried to use tvu, my tip unless u r in america dont, i was told i could not watch cbs because i was in the uk. grrr

now to serious matters,

i havent seen any highlights, but the main coverage in the uk, they seriously almost fully writen the colts off almost, i think they forgot about clark.

im still uncovinced by the defence, it seemed to work well last week.

im wondering if we still had gonzo, would we consider just doing a saints/07 patriots and just throw it most of the time as our run game is just pathetic. did ryan lilja play on sunday??? and if so, did he look good.

i agree with charlie johnson, he shouldn't be doing jim sorgi's job for a little league side, i would say bafl but that doing them a disservice.

oh and i clicked about the land shark thing within about 7 seconds without reading. (the legs gave it away)

thanks dz.

also dz, hows luz helena doing,

i know you wanted to call her lucy helen, (which was wrong, and i forgot to mention at the time, but wouldn't lucia helena or vice versa be a bit better than light helena (i think thats the correct translation in one language at least).

also i just saw an advert advertising a flight to go see the superclassico (dz will know what i m on about)

Dz on soccer, if the argies dont make the wc, i will love it as an englishman, seriously i swear Bill Bellichick worships maradona.

1. D was great last week.
2. Lilja played and played well
3. The baby is good. She is by far the easiest of our three. Luz does mean light in Spanish. We call her Lucy.
4. The team had better qualify. They are in the playoff spot right now. Maradona has screwed the team up 6 ways to Sunday. I don't want to talk about it. It makes me sick.

written by Ross C, September 20, 2009
no offence, but i hope maradona fails to qualify for the hand of god in 1986, (despite him scoring one of the all time greatest ever goals in the same game.

also im tempted to say that neither tom brady or peyton manning right now is the #1 qb in the league, right now id say it brees.

also channelsurfing.net is that compatitable wuth sopcast, which is the program i use

and one more point about the soccer, dont you lay the best of the rest from oceania if my memory serves me correct, as that has generally been the thing that has kept australia out of the world cup.

cant wait as for once, i actually think england can win it next year, (we destroyed a top ten team in crotia not once but twice 4-1 and 5-1)
Elite Offense
written by Justin Gladhill, September 21, 2009
I think the colts can continue to be elite.smilies/grin.gif It's only the second game.... it's way to early to be judging teams.smilies/wink.gif
...
written by DZ, September 21, 2009
Again, my statement has nothing to do with just one game.

Take the Horseshoe off the helmet and look at the team objectively:

1. Suspect line.
2. No run game.
3. One elite WR, two newbies backing him up.
4. One elite TE, two nobody backups

Even with a HoF QB at the height of his powers, that isn't the formula for an elite offense.

A good offense? Maybe. But a truly elite, put up 28-40 ppg offense? No. I'm sorry. That's not realistic with massive improvement from the line and AG getting healthy.
Why can't rookies be elite?
written by tomippity, September 23, 2009
I can't help, but laugh at the declaration of the Colts D as being the new best unit. I think maybe the Offence read your remarks and took it personally.

Less than a quarter of play and they had 27 points! Thats almost 2 points per minute! I want to know if there has ever been a ratio like that before?

Also, you have pegged the new receivers as "non-elite", but why? So far they have peformed vey well. Even Brown has done well running the ball. Just because your a rookie doesn't mean you can't stand out as an exceptional receiver and Manning is certainly capable of helping a rookie become an elite receiver quickly. Was Devon Hester less than an elite return man for Chicago simply because he was a rookie? What is he now after his rookie year and a failue to put up the same numbers?
...
written by DZ, September 23, 2009
Garcon has two catches in two games. Collie has three.

They were targeted 6 times on Monday. They caught two balls that were caught a combined five yards beyond the line of scrimmage. They have not "performed very well". Garcon made a great run after the catch but busting one screen pass is not the same thing as being an elite WR. Terrance Wilkens did the same thing from time to time.

Rookies can be elite. These rookies are not.

Devon Hester was not an elite receiver...just an elite returner. There is a massive difference.

Manning played a perfect game on Monday, so the Colts scored big. There were still massive problems with the offense that he hid.

Dallas Clark won't wrack up nearly 200 yards receiving every week.
