Wonder-ful Answers
Written by Nate Dunlevy

This week we offer you a Q/A with "Wonder" a Jets fan and regular contributor at UltimateNYG.com.  He was gracious enough to answer some of our questions about this Sunday's game.  You can check out my responses to his queries here.

DZ:  1.  What if anything physical has changed for the Jets since their loss to Atlanta?  Are there any on the field reasons for their improved play?
W: Shonn Greene.
DZ:  2.  Revis struggled with Wayne in the first matchup, getting beat several times and picking up an interference penalty.  Are you worried about that matchup?
W: Not even in the least.

DZ:  3  In the first meeting, Manning was not sacked and only hit once.  What can the Jets do to get pressure on him this time around?
W: More disguised blitzes.

DZ: 4. The Jets have not won this year when they allow more than 17 points.  What is more likely:  the jets hold Indy under 17 or the Jets score 24 points?  Can they beat the Colts if Indy scores 20 points?
W: If the Jets can hold the Colts to 17, they have a very good chance of winning. 20 is pushing it, 24 forget about it.  JETS MUST CONTROL THE CLOCK for at least 33 min and run UP THE MIDDLE effectively.  It is only ok to run outside with Greene on a zone blocking play with Faneca pulling.
DZ:  5.  Describe for me the best case scenario for Sanchez in this game.  How many throws for how many yards?
W:  18-24 throws, 175 yards.
DZ:  6.  The Jets have scored 30% of their TDs on big plays.  In the post season, that number has jumped to 60%.  Against a defense that allows fewer long plays than any team in football, do you think the Jets can sustain drives for touchdowns?
W:  Expect the Jets get one big play to Keller, Cotchery or Edwards.

DZ:  7.  What is the difference between the Ravens and Jets?  They seem like the same team.
W:  Incorrect.  Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones are power runners and Ray Rice is a quicker cutback scat runner.  The Ravens have no Braylon Edwards because Mason cannot burn anyone deep.  On defense the LBers and Secondary of the Jets are much better and the Ravens DL is better.
DZ:  8.  Aside from turnovers, the single biggest factor on Sunday will be...?
W:  The clock.

DZ:  9.  The Jets had problems blocking Dwight Freeney in the first game, and that was without Robert Mathis playing.  How do you think they'll handle the Indy pass rush?
W:  Not worried in the least because they are just going to run the ball.  When they pass, they will use play action.  Freeney and Mathis will have to line up closer to the tackles to help the inside power running game.. when they do that they lose the ability to be speed edge pass rushers on the outside.
DZ:  10.  Final score prediction?
W:  20-17, flip a coin.

Seriously this guy's answers were all tl;dr
Really?

He took time out to answer the questions? I'm guessing maybe 17 or 18 seconds. I'm sorry, but those answers are embarassing, and not gracious in the least. He thinks the Jets will throw the ball 18-24 times, yet doesn't think Freeney or Mathis will have an impact because they are "just going to run the ball."

Has this guy watched ANY Colts football all year? I seriously doubt he has actually watchd any Jets football either that wasn't spelled out on his lite-brite.

I thought it was worthwhile. Based on the comments of the past week, I know Jets fans think some of our comments are ridiculous. But its good to know what intelligent people on the other side think their strength is.

The things that jumped out at me were: 1) the Colts will have to respect Edwards deep (despite his hands), which means the Jets can stretch the field more than the Ravens could. And 2) Greene does appear to be more of a north-south runner than Rice/Johnson, which means he's better suited to take advantage of the Colts defensive weaknesses.

...or of wishful thinking.

Let's see:

1) Shonn Greene played against our half-defense. He and Thomas had combined for about 70 yards before our half-starters sat down.

2) Manning-Wayne became the QB-WR tandem with the most intimate rapport in the league the moment the Colts let Harrison go. I'd be worried about that match-up every week.

3) Right, because Manning has never faced disguised blitzes before - especially from a Rex Ryan defe.... oh, wait.

4) This one was an honest answer. Personally, I think the Jets have to hold the Colts to less than 2 TDs, and force multiple turnovers.

5) Sanchez averaged 13/24 for 163 yards in the regular season. Even though in the playoffs his completion percentage has jumped from just over 50% to just over 60%, and his YPA from 6.7 to 7.4, throwing for 175 yards is going to require a 15/24 kind of performance. We'll see.

6) If the Jets only get one big play, expect them to lose.

7) I think the Ravens secondary (Revis notwithstanding) poses a bigger challenge for Manning, for one reason: Ed Reed.

smilies/cool.gif Ask Miami how that philosophy worked out for them. The biggest factor in this game, turnovers or otherwise, will be Manning.

9) Freeney and Mathis line up in the same spots most of the time. Sometimes they rush from out wide, but normally the front four don't change their alignment. The Tackles stay in tight, and the OLBs are required to contain on the outside.

The only ways to stop Freeney/Mathis are a) TE/RB blocking help or b) egregious holding.

Oh, and neither Freeney nor Mathis is purely a speed rusher.

10) 27-6 Colts, and the only coin flip will be the one to start the game.

The only problem with that thinking is:

a) If Sanchez takes long enough for Braylon to get open deep, he's going to meet Freeney and/or Mathis, and

b) The Colts' run defense doesn't struggle against north-south power runners. They are susceptible, if anything, to delays and cut-backs.

Shonn Greene running between the tackles? Bring it all day long, please.

I say Payton's 4th quarter zeal pulls Colts to a 21-17 score.

Pretty weak responses. Appearently the Jets fans get their confidence from Rex as well. Good luck to them. They're gonna need it.

Exactly. North/South runners play right into the Colts hands. On the other hand the reason I was so afraid of Ray Rice is because of his cut backs.. They take advantage of the Colts fast and sometimes over pursuit on run plays.

The Jets power running should be easy for the Colts to handle.

The first issue with this post is that you got a contributor on a Giants site to answer questions about the Jets! That would be like asking you to answer questions about the Chicago Bears.

A couple thoughts...The Jets running game is best late in the game. They are strong up front, so 70 yds against the Colts starters is actually pretty good.

If Wayne has a big game, and Revis is covering him, you guys should all chip in and buy him a crown. He will have proven himself to be the best in the game.

If Freeney and Mathis are so great, and are going to be killing the Jets all day I sure would like to know what stats you are looking at. I think both are killer, but the Colts have just 2 more sacks than a Jets team who did not sack the QB well.

The Jets keep getting counted out by everyone but those who have watched them and know that they are dangerous. They shouldn't be in the playoffs right? The Colts...who lost to the Jets...gave them the game. Cincinnati laid down right? Cincinnati was going to kill them in the playoff though. San Diego was surely going to destroy them. Zombie was writing last week about how the Colts were going to beat the Chargers...and yet, here the Jets are...oops

I don't expect us to win...but the talent gap here is not as large as you have all fooled yourself into believing. The Jets can win this game.

I will be back to gloat if they do, and to congratulate if they don't. Good luck guys. Let's hope it's, at very least, a competative game.

1. He's a contributor to a Giants site, but apparently he's a huge Jets fan. Frankly, I'm disappointed by his performance. I was led to believe he'd be more thoughtful.

2. The Colts as a team didn't get a lot of sacks, because they don't blitz much and don't get pressure up the middle. Almost all their sacks come from Freeney and Mathis. They are dominant, even if the rest of the team doesn't hit the QB well. The difference between the Colts and Jets is that Indy gets almost the same pressure blitzing less than half the amount the Jets do.

3. The Jets had 66 yards on 20 carries against the starters. If you think that's good, then we have different definitions of good.

4. Wayne is already a top 5 WR, so no one would be shocked if he posted 80 yards tomorrow.

DZ,
1) For Jets comments in the future...you'd be much better off contacting anyone from thejetsblog.com. It's the most active Jets site on the internet. The contributors really know the team. I have seen them give some really honest assessments before.
No big Jets fan is going to be a contributor on a Giants site. I am not sure how this works out in Indy, but I thought my Indy fan/Bears analogy works.

2) Noted, but the Jets can blitz because their pass D is the best in the league. I don't see a world of sacks coming in this game from Freeney or Mathis...and I think the two are fantastic.

3) 60 yards is not great, but with a power running game, it is a cumulative effect. Later in the game, it comes on stronger.

4) Wayne is a fantastic receiver. Top 5...no doubt at all.
Point is that I just do not see him having some monster game where Johnson, Owens, Colston, Jackson and a who's who of the best WR's in the game could not. 2 TD's to the wideouts that Revis covered ALL YEAR. Against Revis, just 60 yds and even 1 TD would be shocking.
If Wayne has some monster game, then the Colts have won, Colts fans can celebrate another SuperBowl Sunday and Wayne is, BY FAR, the absolute best in the game...and it is time to change the name of this blog to reflect this.

I got the analogy, Tom. I don't know what to say. I didn't seek him out. The author of the Giants blog wrote me and told me his friend is a huge Jets fans and would be great. He didn't seem as into as his friend suggested he would be. That's all I know.

Re: Mathis Freeney. What makes them so devastating is that they lead the world in forced fumbles since they entered the league. They may only get a sack a game, but the odds that it causes a turnover are through the roof.

Re: cumulative effect. I can buy that. The problem is that it only comes into play if the game is close. If the Jets get down by 10 points, they'll never get the chance to cash in.

Ah...that makes sense then.

I like Mathis and Freeney. I especially love watching Freeney. A very exciting player with great moves. They can be a devastating force. The matchup against one of the strongest o-lines in the league is going to be great. Actually the whole game is full of interesting matchups. Wayne vs. Revis. Indy D against Jets running game...etc. Good stuff.

Love the rampant homerism on your blog. Good stuff. Enjoy the game and I would like to invite you to cheer for the Jets in the Superbowl against whoever they play. haha.

Enjoy man.
